Liverpool are the club with most to worry about as the Premier League returns on Saturday 10 October. Centre-back Jeremy Jacquet was left out of France's 4-1 win over Belgium on Monday with what the French federation called a strain to his left hamstring, and forwards Alexander Isak and Cody Gakpo both came home early from international duty. All three are doubts for Sunday's game against Manchester City at Anfield.
The break was the first three-week pause of its kind in the Premier League and Championship, introduced by FIFA in place of two shorter windows. BBC Sport noted that it is too early to say whether it has produced more injuries than usual, since a fair comparison needs a full season of data.
How serious is Jeremy Jacquet's injury?
Zinedine Zidane described the 21-year-old as "slightly injured" after the Belgium game. Jacquet had played France's two previous matches, his first for the senior side, and has appeared in all seven of Liverpool's games this season, six of them as a starter next to Virgil van Dijk. Andoni Iraola can turn to Ronald Araújo, on loan from Barcelona, and Joe Gomez if Jacquet is unavailable.
Up front the picture is more complicated. Isak, who scored Liverpool's winner at Bournemouth on 20 September, left Sweden after one match with a minor thigh problem. Gakpo lasted 17 minutes of the Netherlands' game against Serbia before going off with an ankle injury. ESPN reports that summer signing Bradley Barcola could be used centrally, or Florian Wirtz pushed further forward.
Which other Premier League players were hurt?
| Player | Club | Problem | Where it happened |
|---|---|---|---|
| Erling Haaland | Manchester City | Asked to come off after 67 min | Norway v Portugal |
| Nico O'Reilly | Manchester City | Returned to club for treatment | England camp |
| Kai Havertz | Arsenal | Muscle strain | Germany v Netherlands |
| Christos Tzolis | Arsenal | Hamstring, off after 18 min | Greece v Netherlands |
| Alex Scott | Bournemouth | Thigh, expected out for weeks | England v Croatia |
| Brian Brobbey | Sunderland | Hamstring | Netherlands v Germany |
| Dan Ballard | Sunderland | Hamstring | Northern Ireland v Georgia |
| Micky van de Ven | Tottenham | Hand, after collision with Luka Jović | Netherlands v Serbia |
| Jan Paul van Hecke | Tottenham | Foot | Netherlands v Serbia |
| Patrick Dorgu | Manchester United | Off after 30 min | Denmark v Wales |
Arsenal defender Ezri Konsa also left the England squad before the Czechia game, and BBC Sport reported that Bournemouth are unhappy with how England managed Scott's injury. Portugal coach Jorge Jesus revealed that Bruno Fernandes, Manchester United's captain, had played despite pain.
What does it mean for Matchday 6?
The biggest question is Haaland. Norway gave no news on his condition after losing to Portugal, and he left the camp on Monday. Norway's players' union used his case to call for clearer limits on workload and recovery time.
For Arsenal, the absence of Havertz could open the door for Viktor Gyökeres, who scored in all four of Sweden's games. Tottenham will assess Van de Ven before Saturday's trip to Old Trafford; Netherlands coach Xavi Hernández said the problem was not a big one.
Thomas Tuchel, who criticised the longer window before it started, said before the Czechia game that the numbers need to be checked before judging whether it causes more injuries. The next break runs from 9 to 17 November.
