Manchester United attacking midfielder JJ Gabriel turned 16 on Tuesday 6 October, the age at which clubs elsewhere in Europe can offer him a professional contract, and his next move is likely to be abroad. Sky Sports News reports that Gabriel and his family have not yet decided where he will play, but that Barcelona and Real Madrid retain a strong interest, with Paris Saint-Germain and Bayern Munich also following the situation. No club has made an approach to United.
Why does JJ Gabriel want to leave Manchester United?
According to Sky Sports News, the family made a formal request to leave in September, a few days after Gabriel was photographed with the first-team squad on 8 September. That picture was released on Monday as the official 2026-27 team photo, and United saw it as a message that he was part of Michael Carrick's plans.
The disagreement is about first-team minutes. Sky reports that the family asked for Gabriel to play at least 20 minutes in three matches: against Sabah in the Champions League, against Brighton in the FA Cup and against Bournemouth in the Premier League on 25 October. Those requests came before any negotiation over a scholarship contract. He was not eligible for the Sabah game because he was not on United's A-list, so he played against the same opponents in the UEFA Youth League instead and scored a hat-trick.
What has United offered him so far?
United's position, as described by Sky, is that they have shown him a clear route into the first team while protecting his development. He trained with the senior squad in pre-season and made his debut in a friendly against Atlético Madrid, although the family wanted more than the eight or nine minutes he played off the bench. The club also say first-team coaches, together with the medical and performance departments, ran a personal development plan for him.
Sky adds that, earlier in the summer, the family kept him away when the Under-21s returned for training, believing he should only train with the first team. Club sources believe the tension comes from the family wanting to chase records, while United want to manage his long-term progress.
Can JJ Gabriel leave for a European club?
He remains registered with United until the end of the season. Sky reports a belief that, under a FIFA loophole, Gabriel could move to a European club after turning 16 if he secures a European passport, something he can apply for through either parent. Sky Sports News reported on Monday that United will consider legal action if that happens, a threat it says does not concern Gabriel's camp. Now that he is 16 he is automatically added to United's B-list and can be named in matchday squads.
What are the latest rumours about his next club?
These reports are rumours and have not been confirmed by any club:
| Club | Report | Source |
|---|---|---|
| Real Madrid and Barcelona | Ready to offer a substantial salary, bonuses and a signing-on fee | Florian Plettenberg (via BBC Sport) |
| Bayern Munich | Still hopeful, but unwilling to meet the seven-figure salary requested by the player's camp | The Times (via BBC Sport) |
| Paris Saint-Germain | Keeping a close eye on the situation | Sky Sports News |
For now Gabriel is still a United player, and Sky says people at the club still believe Old Trafford is the best place for him to develop.
