How it works

In a accumulator the total odds are the product of every price, and one losing selection loses the bet. A void usually counts as odds of 1.00 (it drops out and the rest stand); check each book’s rules.

A system bet covers every combination of a given size: with 4 selections there are 6 doubles, 4 trebles and 1 four-fold. The stake you enter is per bet, so the total cost is number of bets × stake.

Trixie, Yankee, Canadian, Heinz, Super Heinz and Goliath include every combination of 2 or more selections. Patent, Lucky 15, Lucky 31 and Lucky 63 add the singles too, so they return something with just one winner.

Some bookmakers pay extra bonuses on Lucky 15/31/63 bets when only one selection or all of them win. Those bonuses vary by operator and are not included here.

Formulas

  • Acca odds = o₁ × o₂ × … × oₙ (void = 1, lost = 0)
  • Acca return = stake × total odds
  • Bets in a system = sum of C(n, k) for each size k
  • System return = Σ stake × product of each combination

Worked example

Three selections at 4/5, 11/10, 9/14 with £10.00: the accumulator pays 47/9 and returns £62.26 if all three win. If the third loses, the whole accumulator is lost. With a Trixie (4 bets, £40.00 in total) and the same third selection losing, the double on the first two still returns £37.80.

FAQ

What happens if a selection in my acca is void?

It normally counts as odds of 1.00 and the bet carries on with the rest. In the calculator, mark it as “Void”.

What is the difference between a Trixie and a Patent?

Both use 3 selections. A Trixie is 3 doubles and 1 treble (4 bets); a Patent adds the 3 singles (7 bets), so it returns something with one winner.

How many bets are in a Yankee and a Lucky 15?

With 4 selections, a Yankee has 11 bets (6 doubles, 4 trebles, 1 four-fold) and a Lucky 15 adds the 4 singles for 15 bets.

Does an acca or a system bet pay more?

If everything wins, the accumulator pays more for the same total outlay. The system bet costs more bets in exchange for paying out when a selection lets you down.
