How it works
An each way bet is two bets of the same stake: one on the selection to win and one on it to place. A £5 each way single costs £10.
The place part is settled at a fraction of the win odds, the place terms: 1/4 or 1/5 are the usual ones. At 8/1 with 1/4 terms, the place odds are 2/1.
If the selection wins, both parts pay. If it only places, the win part loses and the place part pays at the reduced odds. If it finishes outside the places, both parts lose.
In each way multiples (doubles, trebles, accas, Lucky 15) the win bets and the place bets run as two separate multiples: every selection must win for the win acca and place for the place acca. A Lucky 15 each way is 30 bets.
Formulas
Total stake = number of bets × 2 × stake per partPlace odds (decimal) = 1 + (decimal odds − 1) × place termsWin return = stake × product of win odds (only if every selection wins; void = 1)Place return = stake × product of place odds (won or placed; void = 1)
Worked example
A £5.00 each way single at 8/1 with 1/4 terms costs £10.00. If it wins, it returns £60.00 (win part £45.00 plus place part £15.00). If it only places, it returns £15.00, a £5.00 profit on the £10.00 staked.
